Empire State building taking the green step

Environmental sustainability can successfully progress only with smaller scale businesses making the right steps along the way. Article found at GreenBiz.com http://www.greenbiz.com/news/2011/02/02/empire-state-building-strikes-back-energy-inefficiency?page=0,0  discusses recent developmental changes in New York's major attraction the Empire State Building doing just that. Building owner Anthony Malkin is taking initiative by making architectural changes in the building while saving millions of dollars and showing a great example for other businesses to follow. Malkin mentions a few basic but essential, energy conscious steps when leasing facilities for businesses. It is imperative for us as business students to comprehend importance of environmental sustainability as well the impact we will have as future decision makers by utilizing innovative methods being implemented such as ones by Anthony Malkin.

  1. This is another great example of how going "green" is not only good for the environment, but very cost effective. Saving $4.4 million annually from the renovations sounds like a lot of money that can be used to invest in other things. I'm also surprised that the return on investment will only take three years. This is definitely the strategy all building designers should be incorporating. I wonder if the Willis Tower (formerly Sears Tower) will be implementing similar renovations in the near future.

  2. Malkin's expert power, in this case his knowledge and ability to create a sustainable building, is inspirational to many, hopefully including other architects of the world. Making changes, and simple ones at that, that are able to create that type of change is just awesome. It would be nice to see Malkin continue similar work while also inspiring other architects and existing buildings to work on becoming completely sustainable.
